Eight inches is a deliberate size. It is big enough to read as a proper gift and small enough to sit on a hospital tray, fit in a gift bag, or ship without the freight cost of a large plush. The exterior is soft polyester plush with polyester fiberfill and no hard parts, and the whole thing is CPSIA compliant, which is not optional if a child is going to hold it. Ask any supplier for their CPSIA documentation before you order custom plush for a kids audience. If they hesitate, walk.
